On Friday, the Delhi Capitals put up an all-round performance to comfortably defeat former champions Mumbai Indians by nine wickets and move to the top of the Women’s Premier League rankings. When asked to bowl, DC initially restricted the victor of the inaugural event, MI, to 123 for nine, thanks to Jess Jonassen’s excellent bowling performance. Jonassen returned with superb figures of 3 for 25 from four overs to break DC’s backbone, taking important wickets of in-form Nat Sciver-Brunt, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, and G Kamalini. Chasing the modest mark, skipper Meg Lanning (60 not out off 49) and Shafali Verma (43 off 28) combined 85 runs off 59 balls to give DC a strong start.Shafali was on fire until she was removed while attempting to hit right-arm bowler Amanjot Kaur over deep midwicket. She failed to obtain the elevation, resulting in a simple catch for Amelia Kerr near the boundary.

However, Shafali and Lanning had essentially secured the match for DC with their offensive batting.

Shafali’s 28-ball knock included four boundaries and two sixes.

Lanning, who was struggling for runs, ultimately joined the party with a magnificent unbroken knock that included nine boundaries.

Jemimah Rodrigues stayed undefeated on 15 off 10 balls as DC chased down the mark with 33 balls remaining.Prior to losing their openers Hayley Matthews (22) and Yastika Bhatia (11) in quick succession, DC had a respectable start when they decided to bat.

Before being removed LBW by Jonassen in the eleventh over, Sciver-Brunt, who was in excellent form, shared 38 runs for the third wicket with captain Harmanpreet Kaur (18).

However, Sciver-Brunt gave Jonassen a straightforward return catch to go out in the fourteenth over.

After that, Sajeevan Sajana failed to further her team’s case by going for a flamboyant shot over the leg side and ballooning a straightforward catch to DC captain Meg Lanning off Minnu Mani’s bowling at extra cover. With MI struggling at 104 for 7 in 17.5 overs, G Kamalini was also unable to save her team after being thrashed by Jonassen in the 18th over.

With no fixed batter in hand, MI struggled toward the finish but somehow passed the 120-run threshold without getting bowled out.

With eight points from six games, DC jumped to the top of the WPL rankings thanks to the victory, while MI dropped to second place with six points from five games. In their upcoming game, DC will play Royal Challengers Bengaluru here on Saturday, while MI will play UP Warriorz in Lucknow on March 6.
