According to testimony from forensic physician Mauricio Casinelli, water had been building up in Maradona’s lungs for “at least 10 days” before to his passing from liver cirrhosis and heart failure.

A specialist who took part in the late football legend’s autopsy testified Thursday in the trial of seven medical professionals charged with homicide over the death of Diego Maradona, stating that the condition of his body indicated he must have died “in agony.” According to testimony from forensic physician Mauricio Casinelli, water had been building up in Maradona’s lungs for “at least 10 days” before to his passing from liver cirrhosis and heart failure. He informed the justices that the nurses and doctors caring for him ought to have noticed. At least 12 hours before his death, Maradona must have been in “agony” because his heart “weighed almost twice as much as a normal one,” according to Casinelli.

At the age of 60, Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020, while recuperating at home following brain surgery for a blood clot. For decades, he had struggled with alcohol and cocaine addiction.

His seven-member medical team is on trial for what the prosecution has described as the “horror theater” of his last days. Two weeks after undergoing surgery, Maradona was discovered to have passed away from heart failure and acute pulmonary edema, a condition in which fluid builds up in the lungs.

According to Casinelli, Maradona’s residence did not appear to be “a suitable place for home hospitalization.”

The defendants in this case are charged with “homicide with possible intent”—following a course of conduct even though they knew it would result in the death of their patient.

They run the prospect of serving eight to twenty-five years in prison.
