Dinesh Karthik is one of the IPL’s most seasoned wicket-keeper hitters, having played for six different clubs. As the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League gets underway on March 22, wicketkeeper-battler Dinesh Karthik will make his final appearance in the league before deciding to retire from international cricket following the lucrative Twenty20 competition. Since 2008, the 38-year-old has participated in every IPL season since it began, missing just two games in 16 years. He is presently under contract with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. “Dinesh Karthik’s (season) final IPL will be in 2024. Under anonymity, a BCCI source told PTI that “he will decide his international retirement after the IPL.”
Karthik is a six-time IPL representative and one of the league’s most seasoned wicket-keeper hitters.
In 2008, he made his debut with the Delhi Daredevils (now the Capitals), and in 2011, he transferred to the Kings XI Punjab. He played with the Mumbai Indians for the next two seasons before returning to Delhi in 2014, where he was paid an incredible Rs 12.5 crore.
Before spending four seasons with the Kolkata Knight Riders, he played for Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017. He was signed by Royal Challengers in 2015 for a record-breaking Rs 10.5 crore.
In 2018, under his direction, the Kolkata team qualified for the IPL playoffs, and in 2019, they came in fifth place overall.
Karthik was acquired by RCB for a second time for Rs 5.5 crore after being released by KKR before of the 2022 Indian Premier League. Despite primarily serving as a finisher, he had an outstanding 2022 for RCB.
In 16 games that year, Karthik amassed 330 runs at an average of 55 and an impressive strike-rate of 183.33, driving RCB’s push into the playoffs.
Karthik was included in the Indian team for the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup, which will be held in Australia, thanks to his run. However, he did not perform up to par, as Virat Kohli’s team lost to eventual winners England in the quarterfinals.
However, Karthik had already established himself as a commentator with his sharp, methodical style at that point.
Given that his career as a wicketkeeper batsman collided with that of MS Dhoni, the Tamil Nadu player had a respectable run at an international career as well.
Following his debut against Australia in 2004, he has participated in 26 Test matches, amassing 1025 runs, affecting 57 catches, and producing six stumpings. His final Test match was in 2018.
Throughout 94 ODI matches from 2004 to 2019, he amassed 1752 runs, 64 catches, and 7 stumpings.
Since the first IPL season, Karthik has participated in 242 games and amassed 4516 runs at a 25.81 average, 132.71 strike rate, and 20 half-centuries. 36 stumpings and 141 catches have been impacted by him.
