Following testing, it was determined that his suspected behavior at a county game in September was unlawful.
Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in all England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) competitions after his actions were determined to be illegal during independent testing at Loughborough University earlier this month. The umpires called Shakib’s action into question in September during his one-off debut for Surrey in the County Championship.
To overturn the suspension, Shakib must pass an independent appraisal of his actions, which means his degree of elbow extension in testing must be less than the 15-degree level set by the regulations.
The suspension officially began on December 10, when the ECB received the assessment results from Loughborough University.
Shakib took nine wickets in Surrey’s match against Taunton in September, his first appearance in county cricket since 2010-11.
Shakib’s career has recently been damaged by controversy, originating from his involvement as a Member of Parliament in Bangladesh’s now-defunct Awami League government, following protests in which hundreds of citizens, largely university students, were slain in July and August. He has retired from T20 Internationals and ultimately decided not to travel to Bangladesh (he and his family are located in the USA) for what would have been his final Test in Mirpur in October due to demonstrations in Dhaka, both in support of and against him. Since then, he has not participated in any international cricket matches.
