Moeen Ali has declared his retirement from all international cricket, making him unavailable for England’s forthcoming white-ball series against Australia. At the 2024 T20 World Cup in Guyana, the all-rounder last played for England in their semifinal defeat to India.

“I’m 37 years old, and I wasn’t selected for the Australia series this month,” Moeen stated in a Daily Mail interview. “I’m an experienced cricket player for England. I also received an explanation that it’s time for the next generation. It seemed like the appropriate moment. I’ve fulfilled my share.”

Moeen played 138 ODIs and 92 T20Is for England throughout his ten-year career. He made his white-ball debut for the national team during their 2014 tour of the West Indies. Moeen made his Test debut at the Lord’s and went on to represent England in 68 matches when Sri Lanka came later that year. With 366 wickets for England in all three formats, he finishes with 6678 runs, which includes eight hundreds and twenty-eight fifties.

“I’m incredibly happy. You never know how many games you’ll play when you play for England for the first time. Thus, to play about 300… Test cricket dominated my early years. The one-day stuff was more enjoyable once Morgs [Eoin Morgan] took charge. Test cricket, however, was real cricket.”Even now, I’ve attempted to remain realistic. I could keep trying to play for England, but I know I won’t. Even after retiring, I don’t think it’s because I’m not good enough; I still believe I can play. But I understand how things are, and the squad needs to transition into a new phase. It’s about being truthful to myself.

“People forget the influence you have in games. It could have only been 20 or 30, but it was a critical 20 or 30. Making an impact was important to me.I know what I provided to the team, both on and off the pitch. I was content as long as people loved watching me play, regardless of how well I performed.”

Moeen also stated that he intends to continue playing franchise cricket and may eventually pursue a teaching career. Moeen is presently playing in the CPL 2024 with the Guyana Amazon Warriors, the defending champions.”I still enjoy playing franchise cricket. But coaching is something I want to do; I want to be the greatest. Baz [Brendon McCullum] can teach me a lot. I hope people will remember me as a free spirit. I played some good and awful shots, but I think people enjoyed watching me.”

Moeen has also played in the IPL for CSK, the SA20 for Joburg Super Kings, and the BPL for Chittagong Vikings in the past year.
