Indian cricketer Jemimah Rodrigues’ membership in Khar Gymkhana has been canceled.
Cricket player Jemimah Rodrigues from India has had his membership with Khar Gymkhana terminated. The Gymkhana’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) overwhelmingly adopted the decision after multiple members complained about her father, Ivan Rodrigues, abusing his membership privileges. “Ivan Rodrigues had been using Jemimah’s membership to book the Presidential Hall at concessional rates,” said Shiv Malhotra, a member of the Khar Gymkhana managing committee. According to reports, these reservations were made in order to plan religious events, which is against Article 4 of the Gymkhana bylaws. When Malhotra and other members spotted these activities, they looked into it and found that throughout the previous year and a half, some 35 such instances had occurred.
In an interview with ANI, Malhotra commented on the revocation, saying, “She (Jemimah) is the pride of the nation as far as her membership is concerned. We hope she continues to bring honors to the nation and wish her well. That is not a problem. She was given the membership. Her father abused the advantage by renting the presidential hall and utilizing her membership. Our members weren’t receiving the space, and the reservation was for one and a half years. It is problematic to abuse that privilege.
Khar Gymkhana Vice President Madhvi Ashar also spoke candidly, stating, “The house was really unhappy to hear all of this when the motion was brought up for hearing and discussed to the members. Our President was charing the meeting at the time. It just so happened that her membership needed to be canceled.
The decision made by the Gymkhana emphasizes how crucial it is to follow the organization’s bylaws and uphold equity when using its facilities. Although Jemimah’s services to Indian cricket are widely acknowledged, the Gymkhana felt that action against the abuse of membership advantages was required.
Rodrigues has amassed 3087 runs and six wickets in his 104 T20Is, 30 ODIs, and three Test matches thus far for India.
