The 51-kg gold champion at the Commonwealth Games, Amit Panghal, will still practice at the Sports Authority of India’s Shilaroo facility.

On June 28, ahead of the Paris Games, Indian boxers headed for the Olympics—minus CWG gold champion Amit Panghal—will embark on a month-long training camp in Germany. In addition to the national squads of Ireland, the United States, Mongolia, Germany, Denmark, and others, the boxers, who include world champion Nikhat Zareen (50 kg) and bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg), will train at the Olympic Center in Saarbrucken, Germany. Nishant Dev (71 kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57 kg), and Preeti Pawar (54 kg) are the other boxers. Dev won the bronze medal in the 2023 World Championship.

On the other hand, Panghal (51 kg) will continue to train at the Sports Authority of India’s Shilaroo center alongside his coaches and support personnel from the national camp before traveling to France to join the rest of the team.

Hemanta Kumar Kalita, Secretary General, Boxing Federation of India, stated in a release that “the training camp in Saarbrucken will not only provide the Indian contingent an opportunity to spar with quality boxers from different countries, it will also help them acclimatize well before the Games as the weather in Germany is similar to the ones they will encounter in Paris.”

Five of the six Indian boxers who qualified for the Olympics—two men and two women—will train in Germany through July 22 before traveling to the French capital to compete.

India has so far brought home three bronze medals from the Olympic Games; the first came from Vijender Singh in Beijing in 2008, and the second came from the renowned MC Mary Kom in London in 2012.

After winning a bronze medal in Tokyo, Lovlina will hope to become just the third Indian and the second woman from the nation to win two consecutive Olympic medals.
