Cheteshwar Pujara of India has been suspended from one county game after Sussex was fined 12 points in the County Championship for a code of conduct violation during the encounter against Leicestershire. According to ESPN Cricinfo, Pujara received an automatic suspension after the club obtained four fixed penalties in the same season and will not be available for this week’s game against Derbyshire. Sussex have also decided to bench three players – Jack Carson, Tom Haines, and Ari Karvelas – for conduct that, in the opinion of head coach Paul Farbrace, “tarnished” last week’s thrilling 15-run win over Leicestershire, according to the website.
“We have made Jack and Tom unavailable for selection for this game at Derbyshire,” Farbrace added. “Following the decision of the umpires and match referee to charge both players with on-field level one and level two offences, we needed to take a stand and show them we will not tolerate such behaviour.”
“Ultimately, it cost us Cheteshwar’s availability, and we were docked 12 points.” It should be noted that Sussex had previously been sanctioned twice by the umpires in the early part of the season, with Pujara penalised with a Level 1 offence in the opening game against Durham and Haines reprimanded similarly during Yorkshire’s visit to Hove.
