Regarding the future of India’s underperforming players, a former BCCI official has asked Ajit Agarkar and new secretary Devajit Sakiya for their opinions.
Team India’s 3-1 series setback in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 has raised severe concerns about struggling talents such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Poor performances from the experienced stalwarts have jeopardised their Test futures, with numerous fans and analysts questioning why they do not play domestic cricket on a regular basis. In view of this situation, a former BCCI official has allegedly recommended that a “strict message” be delivered to individuals who have failed to perform for Team India.
A former BCCI official told the media outlet that he wants tough measures to be taken against players who aren’t playing up to par, according to a report by Dainik Jagran.
“Regardless of what fans and internet media say, cricket is run by the BCCI in this country, and we should also be able to see how the BCCI runs it,” stated the official. “There is a need to send a strong message to all those players who think that they’re bigger than the game,” he continued.
“A new squad must be selected. The new BCCI secretary, Devajit Sakiya, had to call Ajit Agarkar, the head of the selectors, and convey him a firm message, the person added.Team India’s recent performance has fallen short of expectations, particularly since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach. India had suffered a humbling 0-3 Test series thrashing at home against New Zealand, lost an ODI series away to Sri Lanka, and then lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 to Australia since Gambhir’s arrival.
The subpar play of India’s hitters, especially seasoned players like Rohit and Kohli, has been a clear vulnerability during these losses. However, after impressive results in the 2023 World Cup, both are anticipated to continue for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
In June, India will travel to England for their next Test match.
