The Indian team’s captain for the 2024 T20 World Cup is already announced to be Rohit Sharma.
Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team director Joy Bhattacharjya believes that India skipper Rohit Sharma isn’t the best person to lead the squad in Twenty20 Internationals. Having not played a Twenty20 International since India’s 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final loss to England, Rohit returned to the team for the home series against Afghanistan in January of this year, igniting months of conjecture over his future with the Indian team in the shortest format. Following BCCI Secretary Jay Shah’s endorsement of Rohit to captain the squad at this year’s major event in the West Indies and USA, Rohit made his first T20I appearance in more than a year.
Bhattacharjya has expressed doubts about the BCCI’s choice of Rohit as captain as the event draws near. He says the squad has suffered because of the appointment.
“The team may have suffered as a result of the selection of Rohit Sharma as India’s T20 World Cup skipper. Sharma is not the best option right now to captain the side in the Twenty20 International format, according to Bhattacharjya on Cricbuzz.
According to Bhattacharjya, India will have to drop one of the three players—Yashash Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, or all-time great batsman Virat Kohli—from the 15-man World Cup roster because Rohit is currently out of form and cannot be replaced as captain.
“I think Rohit Sharma is an incredible cricketer, and I have the utmost respect for him.” He isn’t hitting well right now, though. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli are currently in stronger shape and could contend for the starting spots. Sharma will start, though, because he is the captain, therefore one of those players who is hitting well will have to bat down in the order,” he continued.
Bhattacharjya gave an explanation for Rohit’s appointment as India’s captain, even though he selected renowned pacer Jasprit Bumrah.”Due to Jasprit Bumrah’s superior bowling ability, I would pick him to be the team’s captain instead of Rohit Sharma. In cricket, Rohit has accomplished everything, but he still needs to win a World Cup. We refer to his desire to cap off his career on a positive note as “book-ending” because he won the 2007 T20 World Cup. That’s a really clever idea,” Bhattacharjya said.
