India head coach Gautam Gambhir, who coaches the Kolkata Knight Riders, is reportedly eager to succeed Rahul Dravid. Still, he has a major ailment.

Several well-known former cricket players have come to light as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) steps up its search for the men’s national team’s next head coach. When the board released the advertisement to locate Rahul Dravid’s replacement, two of the biggest names in India were VVS Laxman and Gautam Gambhir. The board’s shortlist reportedly included players like Stephen Fleming, Justin Langer, Ricky Ponting, and others. But Gautam Gambhir, the coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders, appears to be the top contender on the BCCI’s radar.

Though he is only in his first season as KKR’s coach, Gambhir is reportedly eager to take on the role of head coach for India, according to a story in Dainik Jagaran. However, the former Indian batter had “one condition” to meet before submitting the application.

According to the source, Gambhir will only submit an application for the position in exchange for a “selection guarantee.” The former opening batsman for India is not content to merely apply for the position. Gambhir would only enter the race if he was certain he would be chosen to succeed Dravid.

May 27 is the deadline for applications to become the head coach. The number of prospective coaches that have submitted their names for the position is unknown at this time. Recently, the BCCI denied contacting candidates for the head coach position, including Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer. However, both men stated they had been contacted but had declined the offer.

Gambhir would have to resign from his status as the Knight Riders’ mentor if he were to seek for the position and accept it.The former left-handed hitter, who also won two IPL championships while captaining KKR, has been given the credit for the team’s recent success. One of the main factors contributing to Gambhir’s ascent to prominence as India’s possible head coach is KKR’s IPL 2024 results.
