Magnus Carlsen, the reigning world chess champion, quickly resigned his match against Hans Niemann at the Julius Baer Generation Cup online tournament after just one move, although he didn’t say whether he believed the American was cheating or not.
The Norwegian forfeited games or withdrew from a tournament that also featured Niemann for the second time this month.
The world champion since 2013, Carlsen, withdrew from the Sinquefield Cup earlier this month after suffering a shock defeat with the white pieces to Niemann, who is about 200 ELO points inferior to him.
Since his loss to American Levon Aronian in October 2020, it was the world number one’s first defeat with the white pieces in a classical game.
