Grandmaster Gukesh D, 17, of India made history by emerging victorious in the Candidates Chess Tournament, making history as the youngest contender for the world championship. Later this year, he will challenge China’s Ding Liren, the current world champion, for the title. Here, Gukesh earned nine of a potential fourteen points after tying with American Hikaru Nakamura in his last round match. After the illustrious Viswanathan Anand, he was the only other Indian to win the Candidates. At the age of twelve, Gukesh became the third youngest Grandmaster in chess history, and he has been in the news ever since.
At the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year, he took home a silver medal.
The global championship has not yet been decided upon in terms of dates or location.
