Having defeated the legendary Viswanathan Anand, he was only the second Indian to win the Candidates. 2014 saw the victory of five-time world champion Anand.

Grandmaster Gukesh D, 17, of India made history by emerging victorious in the Candidates Chess Tournament, making history as the youngest contender for the world championship. Later this year, he will challenge China’s Ding Liren, the current world champion, for the title. Here, Gukesh earned nine of a potential fourteen points after tying with American Hikaru Nakamura in his last round match. After the illustrious Viswanathan Anand, he was the only other Indian to win the Candidates. The victory of five-time world champion Anand occurred in 2014.”We’re happy that @DGukesh is now the youngest competitor. Congratulations!” Your achievements are greatly appreciated by the @WacaChess family. You played well and handled difficult situations in a way that personally makes me very proud. Bask in the moment,” Anand said on ‘X’ to congratulate the young person, who, like him, is from Chennai.

The last match between top-seeded American Fabiano Caruana and Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi was exactly what the Indian needed it to conclude in a draw.
Gukesh and the winner would have shared the lead if any of these two players had prevailed, necessitating a tie-break in order to conclude the championship.
At the age of twelve, Gukesh became the third youngest Grandmaster in chess history, and he has been in the news ever since.
At the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year, he took home a silver medal.
The global championship has not yet been decided upon in terms of dates or location.
