Bronze medallist Gulveer Singh of the Hangzhou Asian Games got off to a great start this season by breaking a 16-year-old national record in the men’s 3000m indoor event at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston.The 26-year-old Army runner broke the previous Indian record of 7:49.47 set by Surendar Singh in 2008 with a time of 7:38.26s, placing second in the competition.

Today, Surendar works as a coach.

Gulveer is currently aiming to get automatic qualification for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in the men’s 10,000m, where the entry mark is 27:00.00, after his outstanding performance.Gulveer, who took home bronze in the 10,000m at the Asian Games, said, “I’m thrilled to have clocked a good time in my season’s first indoor race in Boston.”

“A strong showing over the 3000m (indoors) has greatly increased my confidence.” I should be able to perform better in the next outdoor competitions.

In 2023, Gulveer set new national records in the outdoor 5,000-meter race (13:11.82) and 10,000-meter race (27:14.88).

In a 10,000-meter outdoor track race, he set a personal best and national record of 27:14.88, while his best time for a 5,000-meter race was 13:11.82.Kartik Kumar finished the men’s 5000m indoor event in 14:04.67, while Rahul of India also participated in the 3000m indoor race, finishing in 7:55.00. 

Under the guidance of foreign coach Scott Simmons, a core group of Indian middle and long-distance runners are presently training at high elevation in Colorado Springs, USA, in anticipation of the forthcoming Asian and World Athletics Championships.
