In their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Sikkim on Thursday, Baroda created history by recording the highest team total in T20 cricket history. Baroda broke the previous record, which was held by Zimbabwe (344/4 versus Gambia in October 2024), by hitting an incredible 349 for the cost of five wickets. Additionally, this was the first time a team in the SMAT scored over 300; Punjab had previously achieved the highest total of 275/6. With Hardik Pandya out of the team and captain Krunal Pandya not even getting a chance to bat, Baroda amassed this enormous score. Shashwat Rawat and Abhimanyu Singh put together a 92-run partnership for the first wicket, giving Baroda a strong start when they batted first. Abhimanyu blasted 53 off 17 deliveries to reach his half-century, while Shashwat hammered 43 off just 16 balls.
With five fours and fifteen sixes, Bhanu Pania hit an undefeated 134 off 51 deliveries, making it the perfect platform. With a strike rate of 262.75 at the end of his innings, he demonstrated unadulterated power, leaving the Sikkim bowlers looking absolutely helpless against the assault.
Shivalik Sharma and Vishnu Solanki both hit 55 off 17 balls and 50 off just 16 balls, respectively, to raise Baroda’s tally to 349 and set a significant record in the sport’s shortest format.
In the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav scored a scorching 70 off 46 balls in his debut, and Shivam Dube completed his comeback from a three-month injury layoff with a brilliant 37-ball-71 as Mumbai defeated Services by 39 runs.
On the strength of the 130-run fourth wicket partnership between Surya and Dube, Mumbai amassed 192 for 4.Dube took home the majority of the 11 sixes that the two of them hit. Dube managed a couple of fours, but Surya also smashed seven boundaries. The majority of Surya’s hits were on-side, including one six over long-on, a few in the deep mid-wicket area, and one behind square.
The off-spinner Nitin Tanwar was severely hit by both hitters, who took 54 runs in his four overs.
In response, Shardul Thakur saved the day with figures of 4/25 as the Services were all out for 153 in 19.3 overs. Shams Mulani, a left-arm spinner, contributed three wickets as well. After taking a wicket, Dube was named the player of the match.
