India defeated England by 106 runs on Day 4 (Feb 5) of the second Test in Vizag, tying the five-match series 1-1. Chasing 399, England were bowled out for 292 runs in their second innings after the hosts claimed five of the remaining nine wickets in the first session alone. For India, Jasprit Bumrah claimed three wickets, as did spinner Ravi Ashwin, who concluded the Test with 499 wickets.

England began brightly with an overnight score of 67/1 until Axar Patel returned ‘nighthawk’ Rehan Ahmed for a team score of 95. The off spinner struck again shortly after, dismissing first Test hero Ollie Pope and Joe Root, as England reached 154/4 just before lunch on day four. After that, Kuldeep Yadav removed Zak Crawley, who had already hit 76 in the first innings and an incredible 73. After taking a six-for in the opening over, Jasprit Bumrah joined the fray and dismissed Jonny Bairstow. With Bumrah’s wicket, India’s chances of winning were significantly increased, and going into lunch, the hosts were only four wickets away from victory.

All hope of England winning the match was dashed in the second session when skipper Ben Stokes was caught short by Shreyas Iyer trying to sneak a quick single. A 55-run stand between Ben Foakes and Tom Hartley did offer some resistance before Bumrah removed Foakes with a return catch off his own bowling.

Following a 28-run defeat in the first Test in Hyderabad, India pulled off a much-needed turnaround as England’s final two wickets fell for little money. From February 15–19, Rajkot will host the third Test of the series.
