Adille Sumariwalla, the president of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), stated on Saturday that the organisation will require “a few more days” to decide whether to submit an official proposal to host the World Athletics Championships in 2027.
According to its president Adille Sumariwalla, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) will require “a couple more days” to decide whether to submit an official proposal to host the World Athletics Championships in 2027. Although the most recent Worlds were held in Budapest, Hungary, Japan will host the championships in 2025, and India is allegedly considering submitting a formal bid to host the competition in 2027.
Sumariwalla said PTI, “We have not made a formal bid,” during a gathering hosted here by the World Athletics (WA) and AFI.
“We are discussing that internally and in the next couple of days, we will finalise that,” Sumariwalla continued.
Sebastian Coe, a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and president of WA, expressed his desire to see the Olympics come to India, given that India is also preparing to submit an official bid to host the 2036 Games.
“I would love to see the Olympic Games coming to India,” Coe stated to PTI.
“I think the development of the games would be tremendous, and India is an amazing place, so I think it’s for very clear reasons, partly familiar and partly personal. Everyone, I believe, is aware of that. However, the International Olympic Committee will have to make that decision,” he stated.
Coe stated to the local media that hosting international competitions in India is important for the growth of athletics in that nation.
