There was a clear pattern in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction: quick bowlers were in high demand.
Two of the best examples of that trend are the top auction purchases, Pat Cummins (Rs 20.50 crore, SunRisers Hyderabad) and Mitchell Starc (Rs 24.75 crore, Kolkata Knight Riders). Even Harshal Patel (Punjab Kings, Rs 11.75 crore), the most expensive Indian at the IPL 2024 auction, is a pacer. Royal Challengers Bangalore also made Yash Dayal an offer of Rs 5 crore. The Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals previously fielded left-arm bowler Chetan Sakariya, who was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 50 lakh.
One ODI and two T20Is player Chetan Sakariya was signed by Delhi Capitals for an incredible Rs 4.20 crore ahead of the 2022 IPL. He was freed ahead of the IPL 2024 auction, though.”Although not astonished, I was a little let down. However, the team believes that their choice was the right one. I was unable to meet the standards set for me in terms of performance. Perhaps I did not live up to my price tag. They already have Ishant (Sharma) Bhai, Khaleel Ahmed, and Mukesh Bhai as Indian possibilities. Naturally, I fell behind in the hierarchy because I didn’t get off to a quick start,” Chetan Sakariya told news sources.
He continued by saying that Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman taught him a lot. “Mustafizur Bhai and I used to talk a lot, and he would give me a lot of advice on how to organize every delivery and maximize the field placements. The amount of thought a bowler can put into changing the field fascinated me and improved my game. I’m hoping to pick up a lot of knowledge from Mitchell Starc tol and expand my toolkit.”
In the next edition, Sakariya is thrilled to collaborate with Gautam Gambhir, the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders.
“I only wanted to be picked where I would have the most playing possibilities during the auction. That was all I had on my mind. It goes without saying that I will need to perform well. There were just two teams trying to occupy their bowling positions, and KKR was one of them. All I wanted was game time. I just wanted to join a squad where I would get playing time; money didn’t matter,” he remarked.
