Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said on Wednesday that India must protest “very strongly” against the “unfortunate” disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was found to be overweight ahead of the 50kg category Olympic final.
Vinesh was disqualified from the final due to being 100 grams overweight.Gavaskar stated that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Indian government must do everything necessary to remedy this. “I think that is the most unfortunate. I also think it’s (the) most unjust. I hope the authorities take notice of it and respond strongly because this is not just the first round,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Spartan race today.

“We really need to be protesting about this whole thing,” the former captain of India stated, emphasizing that Vinesh must have been crushed by everything that had happened.
Following disappointing performances in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, Vinesh was competing in her third Olympics.
This time, she was really strong and defeated several opponents on route to the final, including the reigning champion Yui Susaki. She will, however, leave the Games empty-handed as a result of her disqualification.Gavaskar supported the Indian team to do well in the remaining Games despite this severe setback.
“It can be disheartening obviously for the whole contingent which has gone there (given) that, you’ve had this situation,” Gavaskar stated.
