Jacob Oram, a former all-round player for the Chennai Super Kings from 2008 to 2010, will lead the New Zealand team on their tour of India.

Former pacer Jacob Oram has been appointed as New Zealand’s bowling coach ahead of the arduous three-Test away series against India, a much-anticipated clash in the upcoming World Test Championship cycle. The powerful right-arm pacer, who takes command on October 7, has three Cricket World Cups and four T20 World Cups under his belt and offers a plethora of experience to the Blackcaps, who are coached by Gary Stead. The first match of the series will be played in Bengaluru from October 16 to 20, followed by tests in Pune (October 24-28) and Mumbai (November 1-5).During the most recent T20 World Cup in the Americas, Oram, 46, coached the Blackcaps’ bowling unit. He also served in a comparable capacity with the New Zealand women’s squad during the World Cup in 2022, which was held at home.

“The 229-capped international officially joins the Blackcaps staff after supporting the team as bowling coach in last year’s Test tour to Bangladesh, February’s T20I series at home against Australia, along with the recent ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies,” New Zealand Cricket said in a statement.

Now ranked third with 50 percentage points behind leaders India and Australia, New Zealand has a good opportunity of making it to the World Test Championship final for the second time in three editions.During his 11-year international career, Oram has played 33 Tests, 160 ODIs, 36 T20Is, and more. “To be back involved with a team that means so much to me and has been a big part of my life is a real honour,” Oram said.

“I’m eager to keep up that work in the upcoming seasons since the recent opportunities I’ve had have given me a wonderful understanding of where this squad is headed.

“The Blackcaps bowling unit has a new generation of talent emerging, and I intend to impart my knowledge and experience to help them better prepare for the demands of playing international cricket. Oram will put his years of experience to use during this critical stage, according to head coach Stead.

“Oram, Jake, is a fantastic operator. His playing career and coaching experiences are self-explanatory.

“He brings a deep understanding of the international game, but also experience in franchise cricket which will be worthwhile in understanding the modern player and the changing landscape of the modern game,” said Stead.
