India vs England: Ravindra Jadeja’s LBW dismissal sparks debate over DRS Ravi Shastri Explains

Joe Root dismissed Ravindra Jadeja LBW for 87. The circumstances behind his departure prompted a controversy on social media.

As India batter Ravindra Jadeja arrived on the pitch on Day 3 of the first Test against England in Hyderabad, he appeared to be on his way to completing his century. However, only a few runs later, England star Joe Root trapped him in front of the stumps, and the umpire raised his finger without hesitation. Jadeja, however, was skeptical and went directly to the third umpire, requesting a DRS referral. The third umpire reviewed the tape from numerous angles and ultimately decided in favor of Root and the England side. But that didn’t prevent a social media controversy from erupting.

The third umpire became confused when the Ultra Edge showed a large spike just as the ball past the bat. However, the hit on the pad happened at the same time. If the ball hit the bat before hitting the pad, the result was inconclusive.

As the third umpire went to track the ball, both the impact on the pad and the stumps displayed ‘umpire’s call’ on the large screen. As the on-field decision was overturned, the final decision favored the bowling side.

Ravi Shastri, who was on commentary duties for the match, concurred with the judgment and explained why Jadeja was not given the benefit of the doubt. The former India head coach further stated that if the on-field decision had gone in favour of the batter, Jadeja would have been not-out.
After Jadeja’s removal, India didn’t score many runs with the bat, with Jasprit Bumrah retiring on the next delivery from Root. Axar Patel also failed to reach a half-century, leaving after a few deliveries as India grabbed a 190-run first-innings advantage against England.
