Rohit Sharma’s team is in a difficult position because rain is predicted for the Asia Cup Super 4 match between India and Pakistan on the next day.
The Colombo weather ensured that play was not feasible after 24.1 overs, during which Indian batsmen had scored 147 runs at the cost of 2 wickets in an Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan. Thankfully, the Asian Cricket Council decided to save a reserve day for the match in Colombo. But on Monday, the weather at the R Premadasa stadium wasn’t as favourable for cricket as the two teams had hoped.

In their matchup with Pakistan, India got out to a fast start, leaving Pakistan to lament some wasted opportunities. Before being removed, captain Rohit Sharma had reached the halfway point of his innings, and opening partner Shubman Gill had also reached the halfway point. The match was postponed due to rain as Virat Kohli and KL Rahul were looking to lead India to a high total.
What occurs if a washout occurs on the reserve day?
The Super 4 format calls for a single matchup between each of the four qualified teams. With two points each, the top two positions are now held by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Because they have a higher Net Run Rate, Babar Azam’s team (+1.051) is in front of the Lankans (+0.420).
Comparatively, India hasn’t yet started their Super 4s campaign; their first game was against Pakistan. With a score of -0.749, Bangladesh is in fourth place. They are already all but out of contention to go to the final.
The two teams will split the points if the India vs. Pakistan match in the Super 4 stage is cancelled. Such an event would raise Pakistan’s total to 3 points, helping them to maintain their lead in the points standings, while India would drop to third place with just 1 point.
Therefore, if the Indian team loses at least one of its next two games, a washout could be dangerous for them. Sri Lanka continues to lead India in the points standings after collecting one victory.
Even though India is scheduled to play two more Super 4s matches, against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, there is no certainty that they won’t be postponed. So games plagued by rain, like the one against Pakistan, don’t really help the Indian squad.
