Valluri Ajaya Babu, an Indian weightlifter, won gold in the men’s 81kg junior and senior categories at the Commonwealth Championships.
Valluri Ajaya Babu of India won the gold medal in the men’s 81kg junior and senior divisions at the Commonwealth Championships in Suva, Fiji, on Thursday, shattering the previous record. Babu, 19, lifted a total of 326kg (147kg + 179kg) to take the first spot on the podium. Babu’s effort set a Commonwealth record for the clean and jerk in the 81kg junior category. He also broke junior national records in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total weight divisions.
Sairaj Pardeshi, a compatriot, won the youth gold medal in the same category while finishing second in the junior segment to Babu.
Lalruatfela took silver in the men’s 89kg event with a best effort of 301kg (135kg+166kg), while Hrudananda Das won silver in the youth category and bronze in the junior class with a lift of 299kg (129kg+170kg).
