KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are competing for a place in India’s Asia Cup 2023 squad.
As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) waits to declare the Asia Cup 2023 roster, certain former cricketers, including Ravi Shastri, MSK Prasad, and Sandip Patil, have disclosed their preferred candidates. During a panel discussion, the experts focused heavily on the comeback of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer. While Bumrah is in the India squad for the Ireland T20I series, Iyer and Rahul are still practising in nets and trailing in closed-door setups.
The biggest hope for the injured trio of Bumrah, Iyer, and Rahul is that the pacer will be available for the Asia Cup. However, all three have been out for an extended period of time. Many people felt that Rahul and Iyer’s lack of match practise was problematic.
Rahul and Iyer were passed over as Shastri, Prasad, and Patil met to decide the 15-person team during a discussion on Star Sports.
The opening choices in the top-order according to the experts are Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, and Rohit Sharma. As the experts explored the prospect of his playing No. 4 rather than his customary No. 3 position, Virat Kohli also made the cut.
Suryakumar Yadav was also selected despite his terrible run of form in the 50-over format, and Tilak Varma received a surprise call-up after his heroics against the West Indies in the T20I series. The team’s two all-rounders who can bowl at a fast tempo are Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur.
The ex-Indian stars chose Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja among the spin-bowling all-rounders. Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were chosen as the pair of pure spinners. Ravi Bishnoi, however, had nowhere to go.
Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah, who was back in shape, made up the pace three. Prasidh Krishan was passed over, who is also returning to the Indian time after a protracted injury layoff.
