Steyn, a former South African fast bowler who became SRH’s bowling coach in 2022, has asked the organization to give him a vacation this season for personal reasons.
When the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks off on March 22, Dale Steyn’s position as bowling coach for Sunrisers Hyderabad is expected to be filled by former left-arm bowler James Franklin of New Zealand. After taking over as SRH’s bowling coach in 2022, Steyn, a former fast bowler from South Africa, asked the team to offer him a personal leave of absence this season.
“Dale Steyn won’t be available for this season, so we are in talks with him (Franklin),” an IPL source said to PTI under anonymity.
This is the 43-year-old’s first IPL season as a coach; he had previously played for the Mumbai Indians in 2011 and 2012.
Franklin does, however, have coaching experience, having served as assistant coach for Islamabad United of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Durham of English county cricket.
Franklin will work with Daniel Vettori, a former teammate who was named the team’s head coach following the 2023 Indian Premier League, at SRH.
They had previously collaborated with county cricket teams at Middlesex and Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred.
Between 2001 and 2013, Franklin participated in 31 Tests, 110 ODIs, and 38 T20Is for New Zealand.
