Ishan Kishan is a potential candidate to replace Rishabh Pant as India’s starting wicketkeeper in Test matches.
Ishan Kishan has been mentioned as one of the potential candidates to fill in as India’s starting wicketkeeper till Rishabh Pant is well again. He allegedly chose not to play in the Duleep Trophy, giving up an opportunity to showcase his abilities in the longest format before India’s two-Test series against the West Indies.
In the domestic first class competition, which is set to take place from June 28 to July 16, Kishan may have been a candidate to captain East Zone, but Abhimany Easwaran will now take the helm. According to PTI, a member of the East Zone selection committee claimed that they had requested Debasish Chakraborty, the convenor of the Zonal selection committee, if they might choose Kishan.
He would have received the leadership because he plays white ball regularly for senior India. Chakraborty spoke with Ishan on the phone and then informed us that he was not interested in competing in the Duleep Trophy. If he is injured or not has not been disclosed to us. He just doesn’t want to play,” the selector said, according to PTI.
Kishan hasn’t played in a Test yet, despite being one of the top prospects to start the batting in limited overs cricket. After KS Bharat’s dismal batting performance in India’s home series against Australia earlier this year, calls for him to be selected in the team for the World Test Championship (WTC) final rose. However, for the final, which they ultimately lost by 209 runs, India chose to play with Bharat as their wicketkeeper and put Kishan on the sidelines.
In 48 first-class games, Kishan has amassed 29,855 runs at an average of 38.76, with six centuries and 16 half-centuries.
Further information revealed that Tripura selector Jayanta Dey sought Wriddhiman Saha after Kishan informed him of his choice, and the latter was approached. To be fair to Wriddhiman, he claimed that the Duleep Trophy is intended for potential India players. It makes no reason to restrict a young person from making a case if I will never play for India. As a result, we chose Abhishek Porel, who was the third option,” he continued.
