The offence, which happened on the fourth day of the first Test match in the five-game series, has earned Bumrah an official reprimand.

In the first Test match between India and England, which ended in a disappointing 28-run defeat for the hosts at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been found guilty of violating the ICC Code of Conduct. His infraction, which happened on the fourth day of the first Test match in the five-game series, has earned him an official reprimand.

Bumrah intentionally stepped in Ollie Pope’s path as the batsman took off for a single, resulting in unwanted physical contact, during the 81st over of England’s second innings.

According to Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match),” the India star, who took six wickets in the Hyderabad Test match, violated the rules.

The fast bowler now has one demerit point on his record, but the ICC did not penalize him because it was only his first infraction in 24 months. The accusation was made by fourth umpire Rohan Pandit, third umpire Marais Erasmus, and on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney.

An official reprimand is the minimum punishment for breaking Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, while one or two demerit points and 50% of the player’s match fee are the maximum penalties. Because Bumrah, 30, entered a guilty plea and accepted the punishment imposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, there was no need for a formal hearing about his offense.

On February 2, the Dr. Y.S. Rajashekar Reddy ACA-VDCA International Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam will host the second Test match of the five-game series. After suffering their first-ever defeat in a Test match in Hyderabad, India will be looking to mount a comeback. Additionally, it became the first occasion in India’s 91-year Test history that they have lost a game after building a lead of more than 100 runs in the first innings.
