Jasprit Bumrah suffered back spasms during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy’s Sydney Test against Australia earlier this month.
Even before the ICC Champions Trophy begins, India is expected to suffer a significant blow as fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is allegedly expected to miss the group stage matches due to an injury. Earlier this month, Bumrah suffered back spasms during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series match against Australia in Sydney.
Bumrah has been summoned to report to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru because of a swelling on his back, according to a report in news sources. The injury condition of Bumrah has been updated for the BCCI selection committee, which met in Mumbai on Saturday to choose the T20I team for the forthcoming home series against England. The Champions Trophy team has been announced by India, despite the fact that the provisional roster for the ICC tournament must be submitted by Sunday, January 12.
The report went on to say that the Bumrah predicament has left selectors wondering if they should add the 31-year-old to the reserves group or choose him from the 15-member roster. The BCCI is expected to submit the Champions Trophy provisional roster, but as countries have until February 12 to make changes to the list, the selectors would probably wait and keep an eye on Bumrah’s health report before making the final decision closer to the tournament’s start.
According to a BCCI insider who spoke to the national daily, Bumrah should be well by the first week of March. The Champions Trophy group round matches for India will conclude in Dubai on March 2.
For his recovery, Bumrah will be attending NCA. According to the first report, his back is swollen but he does not have a fracture. For three weeks, the NCA will keep an eye on his recuperation. However, he will still need to play a game or two after that, even if they are practice matches meant to assess his match fitness, the source stated.
