Hardik Pandya has been India’s full-time captain in the shortest format, but the sad defeat in the final of the 2023 World Cup to Australia has sparked the rumors of senior batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit returning for the T20 showpiece in June.

India will compete in the T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in the Caribbean and the United States, under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced at a ceremony in Rajkot on Wednesday. Hardik Pandya has been India’s full-time skipper in the shortest format, but the sad loss to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final has sparked speculation that senior batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma may return for the T20 showpiece in June.

“We won hearts in the 2023 (final) in Ahmedabad, even though we did not win the World Cup after ten consecutive victories. I want to assure you that in 2024 (T20 World Cup) in Barbados (where the final would be held), under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, ham Bharat ka jhanda gaadenge (we will hoist the Indian flag),” Shah concluded his address.

On Wednesday, the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium was renamed after Niranjan Shah, a senior cricket administrator and former first-class cricketer.
The ceremony, conducted on the eve of India’s third Test against England, was attended by India’s head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel, coaching staff members, and selectors chairman Ajit Agarkar.
Cheteshwar Pujara, Jadeja, and Jaydev Unadkat were among those honored.
Former India captains Anil Kumble and Sunil Gavaskar also honoured Saurashtra players who had earned success in recent years.

Gavaskar credits Niranjan Shah for turning around Saurashtra’s fortunes, as the team is currently two-time Ranji champions.

Niranjan Shah, who played 12 first-class games between 1965 and 1975, was also a former BCCI secretary.
