Charismatic Real Betis’ captain, Joaqun Sánchez, has announced that he would retire at the end of the current season.
Charismatic Joaqun Sánchez, the captain of Real Betis, has declared his retirement at the conclusion of the current campaign.
The 41-year-old midfielder, who is well-known for both his well-rounded skill set and humorous sense, revealed his choice in a video shared on social media on Wednesday.
Finally, he declared, it was time to “hang up my boots, my art.”
Joaqun, who maintained a lighthearted demeanour throughout his career, will retire after 23 seasons, the most of which were spent with his old club Betis. In Italy, he also played for Fiorentina, Valencia, and Malaga.
To surpass the mark for most league appearances, presently held by former Spain and Barcelona goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta, who played 622 league games, Joaqun has to participate in eight of Betis’ last nine Spanish league games. Joaqun is seated at 615.
Joaqun had thought about quitting last season, but when Betis won the Copa del Rey, he decided to stay for one more season.
Additionally, he assisted Betis in 2005 and was a member of Valencia in 2008 when they won the Copa.
In 2000, when Betis was playing in the second division, Joaqun made his debut with the team’s starting lineup.
Joaqun played for Spain’s national team more than 50 times, although he hasn’t since 2007. He asked then-Spain coach Luis Enrique in a parody Instagram video that he made in 2018 why he hadn’t been selected for the team.
“I don’t know if these two missed calls are from you or not, but I have two here.” Joaqun enquired.
Call me if you can. I’m concerned.
