The captain of the New Zealand cricket team will set out to miss the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which is going to be held later this year.
The New Zealand cricket team captain is going to miss the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 after an evaluation of a knee injury that he sustained in the opener against Gujarat in the 2023 IPL season. He injured his right knee and had to be carried off the field. He visited his specialist this week after returning to New Zealand, and now New Zealand Cricket has confirmed that he ruptured his interior cruciate ligament and will need surgery.
Now he will not be eligible and fit enough for the selection for this year’s Cricket World Cup in India given the typical rehabilitation timelines; within the next 3 weeks, he will undergo knee surgery. Williamson wished to express his gratitude for the support he had received in the wake of his injury after learning the news.
As he said, “I’ve received great support over the past few days and want to thank both the Gujarat Titans and New Zealand Cricket for that.” Naturally, it’s disappointing to get such an injury, but my focus now is on having the surgery and starting rehab. It’s going to take some time, but I’ll be doing everything I can to get back on the field as soon as possible.
India is going to host the ODI World Cup from October 5 to November 19. During the last two world cups, when Williamson captained Team New Zealand, he took the team to the finals; hence, this is going to be a huge loss for the team.
Williamson also said, “I look forward to doing what I can to support Gary and the team over the next few months.”
During the opening match of the Gujarat Titans’ against the Chennai Super Kings, he sustained this knee injury.
