“Rumor or Someone Wanting To Sideline Me”

Since the T20 World Cup 2021 ended, Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy has not played for his country.

Varun Chakravarthy, one of the most tricky spinners to face on the Indian circuit, was fast-tracked into the Indian team following his outstanding exploits for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. Varun was expected to be a match-winner for India in the 2021 T20 World Cup, but he did not perform well during the tournament and has not featured for the Indian squad since. His performance in the IPL declined the following season, but the mystery spinner is still upset about certain ‘rumours’ surrounding his fitness.

Varun claimed in an interview that people had overstated the severity of his injury. He’s not sure if it was just a hearsay or if someone tried to circulate false information in order to keep him away from the Indian national team.

“It was quite difficult because it was a minor injury that occurred just after the World Cup. It took me only two or three weeks to get back on track, but after that, I was sidelined and people would always use my injury as an excuse—even though I hadn’t been hurt for that long. I’m not sure if this was merely a rumor or if someone was only trying to discredit me by spreading this information. However, such is the unjust nature of life. It was very hard on me,” he told some news sources.

“The World Cup and what happened to me in 2021 got to me, and I was desperate to be back in the Indian team, so IPL 2022 was not a great season.” I therefore wanted to show everyone. I was acting incredibly frantic. I began modifying a lot of aspects of my bowling, which ultimately had an impact on my mental health and prevented me from bowling as I normally would. Therefore, IPL was horrible for me,” he continued.

Varun hasn’t been considered for any of the three formats since his final India match in November 2021. Although the player acknowledged that he was eager to don the Indian jersey once more in the past, he no longer has high expectations.

“I took a break and realized what was going on with me. Everything is cool now; I’m not as desperate. I am familiar with how things operate. Who am I to judge when even the greatest of the best will be sidelined? There has been news that they will. I’m not expecting anything. Let me see what comes my way; I’ll try my hardest.

“Recognizing reality is the best course of action. In the cutthroat world of business, nobody will genuinely look out for you or think well of you. Everyone competes with themselves and faces unique challenges.

I can’t just rush behind someone and ask them, “Why aren’t you choosing me?” I am depressed and I don’t feel well. I refuse to attend this match. It’s not expert. My best option is to simply show up to the matches, give it my all, take a nap, and trust that God will take care of the rest. I’ve just come to terms with the fact that the rumors caused a significant blow to my career,” he said.
