Gukesh.The Norwegian maestro who was playing the dark pieces outperformed Gukesh during the performance at Hamburg’s Weissenhaus Luxury resort.Gukesh advanced to the knockout stage by placing in the top eight.
In the round-robin quick format, which gave each player 10 minutes plus a ten-second increment, French Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja and Uzbekhir Sindarov led the table with 6.5 points out of a possible nine.
Gukesh finished in eighth place with 3.5/9 points after drawing seven and losing two rounds, against Carlsen and Firoujza.The last two finishers, Levon Aronian of the USA and Vladimir Fedoseev of Slovenia, will now compete for ninth place.
