Mary Kom announces her resignation as chef-de-mission of India’s Olympic team in Paris, citing private matters.
M C Mary Kom, a six-time world champion boxer, resigned on Friday as India’s chef-de-mission for the forthcoming Paris Olympics, citing personal concerns. PT Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), said that Mary Kom had asked to be released of her post in a letter sent to her. “I consider it an honor to serve my country in any capacity imaginable, and I was psychologically prepared for it. However, I regret that I will be unable to uphold the distinguished position and would wish to resign due to personal issues,” the 41-year-old wrote in a letter to Usha.
“I rarely back out of a commitment because it is embarrassing, but sometimes there is nothing I can do. With high hopes, I am there to support my nation and the athletes competing in these Olympic Games,” she continued.
Her appointment had been announced on March 21 by the IOA.
Celebrated boxer and 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist, the boxer was supposed to lead the nation’s logistics team during the July 26–August 11 Games.
“We are sorry to hear that Mary Kom, the Olympic boxer and Chair of the IOA Athletes Commission, has resigned for personal reasons. Usha issued a statement saying, “We support her choice and her privacy.
“I shall make the appropriate consultations and soon make an announcement about the replacement for Mary Kom.” Usha claimed that after receiving Mary Kom’s letter, she spoke with her.
“I respect her decision and fully understand her request.” Furthermore, I have informed her that IOA and I myself would always be there for her. The great boxer’s privacy is something I also want everyone to respect,” she stated.
