Marcus Trescothick, an Australian who was halfway through a four-year contract, will step in temporarily.

Effective immediately, Matthew Mott is no longer leading the England Men’s white-ball team.

Mott had been in charge of the team’s success at the 2022 T20 World Cup and their inability to defend either the 50-over title they had won in 2019 or the title this year at the 2023 tournament, where they had won just three of their nine games, halfway through a four-year contract.

The remainder of the home summer, which includes three Twenty20 Internationals and five One-Day Internationals against Australia in September, will see him temporarily replaced by assistant coach Marcus Trescothick.

As part of an investigation into the decline in the team’s limited-overs performances, Mott met with Rob Key, the ECB managing director of England men’s cricket, on Sunday to get his perspective on the previous nine months.

“I am immensely proud to have coached the England Men’s team; it has been an honour,” Mott stated. “Over the past two years, we have given it our all in an attempt to succeed, and I am immensely proud of the team’s spirit and commitment, which culminated in a fantastic T20 World Cup triumph in 2022. “The players, staff, and entire ECB community have my sincere gratitude for their dedication, encouragement, and hard work throughout my tenure. I take with me a ton of amazing memories and many wonderful friendships. Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to the England supporters, who have consistently supported us and encouraged us no matter where we have gone in the globe.

After being appointed in May 2022, Mott also helped England win white-ball series matches against Pakistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Ireland, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. But the choice seems to have been heavily influenced by England’s most recent World Cup campaign, in which they were eliminated by eventual victors India in the semi-finals.

According to Key, the hunt for a permanent substitute will start right away. “Will help us maintain continuity and stability” is how he perceived the relationship between Trescothick and white-ball captain Jos Buttler.

“On behalf of everyone connected to England cricket and me personally, I would like to thank Matthew for all he has done for the team since his appointment,” said Key. Being one of just three coaches to have won a Men’s World Cup with England, he can feel proud of his accomplishments as he departs his position. “I believe the team needs a new direction in order to get ready for the challenges that lie ahead after three World Cup cycles in a short period of time. Though I don’t think it’s the ideal time for the team’s future success, this choice was not made lightly. It is imperative that we make sure the team is prepared and focused because our attention will now be on the Champions Trophy early in the next year and the upcoming white-ball season.”

“England cricket is in a strong position and the potential is huge, given the quality we have available,” Trescothick continued. It’s about making the most of that potential and expanding on the work that Matthew Mott and the rest of the setup have already done. The challenge of deciding how we want to play excites me.”

Reports that England’s former World Cup captain, Eoin Morgan, could take Mott’s place have been brushed off as “speculation” by the columnist.

Kushan Sangakkara, Mike Hussey, who was a member of the coaching team for the successful 2022 T20 World Cup campaign, and Andrew Flintoff, who is presently coaching for the first time with Northern Superchargers in the men’s Hundred, are among the other names floating around for the position. But as far as is known, at this point, no potential Mott successors have been contacted.
