Skipper Meg Lanning scored 69 off 49 balls as Delhi Capitals defeated UP Warriorz by seven wickets in Vadodara on Wednesday. Sent into bat, UP Warriorz scored 166 for seven thanks to opener Kiran Navgire’s quick-fire half-century. However, the total was insufficient because, in addition to Lanning, Annabel Sutherland scored a key 35-ball 41-run knock, assisted by Marizanne Kapp (19 not off 17) and opener Shafali Verma (16 off 16). Delhi finished the chase with one ball remaining.DC got off to a quick start, with Shafali and Lanning scoring 65 runs in 41 balls for the first stand.
Shafali was on fire until she was caught by Chinelle Henry off Deepti Sharma’s eighth over.
Jemimah Rodrigues, too, did not stay long, leaving in the following over without opening her account, attempting to paddle sweep Sophie Eccestone but only getting a top edge, and Rajeshwari Gayakwad finished the job.
Sutherland and Kapp then added 48 runs for the fourth wicket to help DC win.
With 32 runs needed from the final three overs, Kapp broke the deadlock by hitting Ecclestone for two consecutive boundaries.Sutherland hit two boundaries off Tahila McGrath in the final over to send her team home with 11 runs.
Earlier, Navgire (51 off 27 balls) and Dinesh Vrinda (16 off 15) exchanged 66 runs in 5.5 overs to get the UP Warriorz off to a good start.
After that, the UP Warriorz lost five wickets for 52 runs.
Sheweta Sehrawat (37 off 33) and Grace Harris (12) scored 36 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter dropped a simple chance to Shafali Verma at mid-off off pacer Arundhati Reddy’s bowling.
Chinelle Henry (33 not out of 15) made a quick appearance at the end to propel UP Warriorz past 160.Annabel Sutherland was DC’s best bowler, taking 2/26 from four overs.
