Tim David smashed a four off the last ball to lead Australia to a thrilling six-wicket win over New Zealand in the first T20 international in Wellington.

In the inaugural T20 international in Wellington on Wednesday, Tim David struck a four off the final ball to give Australia a thrilling six-wicket victory against New Zealand. Australia’s captain Mitchell Marsh hit 72 off 44 balls after being given 216 to win, while his batting partner David (31 not out) completed an exciting comeback triumph. Before the T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies in June, the three-match series is the final one for both countries. Earlier, with the hosts finishing at 215-3, Rachin Ravindra had pushed New Zealand ahead of the pack with 68 runs off 35 balls, his maiden half-century in the format.

The 22-year-old left-hander moved up to 15th place after helping India win 434 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the series. He became one of only seven cricket players, including two Indians, Vinod Kambli and Virat Kohli, to score double hundreds in two straight Test matches.

Marsh concluded with his best bowling numbers of 1-21 before leading the assault with the bat, blasting seven sixes and two fours in an unbroken knock.

The captain kept his team together after they lost openers Travis Head and David Warner early on.

Adam Milne bowled Head for 24 runs, which Tim Southee caught.

Veteran Warner then hit 32 in the sixth over, which Glenn Phillips caught.

Warner, who had previously insulted New Zealand supporters, blew kisses to the crowd as he was booed off the field.

Marsh and Glenn Maxwell formed a 42-run third-wicket partnership before being clean bowled by Lockie Ferguson on 25 to leave Australia 111-3 after 10 overs.
