At Kolkata, India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, won the toss and chose to bowl against England in the opening Twenty20 International of the five-match series. Unexpectedly, Mohammed Shami, a fit pacer who was supposed to play his debut game for India after a lengthy absence, was left off of the playing XI. Prior to the toss, images showed Shami bowling in the nets, but he was not selected because India’s pace attack will be led by Arshdeep Singh. Axar Patel, the vice captain, and Ravi Bishnoi and Varun Chakravarthy will be in charge of the spin department. Veteran bowler Jofra Archer has been selected for the England playing XI.
