Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League for next month due to a left ankle injury that will require surgery in the United Kingdom.
Mohammed Shami, a senior bowler, will miss next month’s Indian Premier League due to a left ankle ailment, for which he will have surgery in the United Kingdom, a BCCI source told PTI on Thursday. The 33-year-old, who is not participating in the present Test series against England, last appeared for India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November. “Shami was in London in last week of January to take special ankle injections and he was told that after three weeks, he can start light running and take it from thereon.”However, the injection failed, and the only remaining option is surgery. He is about to go for the United Kingdom for surgery.”The IPL appears to be out of the question,” said a top BCCI official on the condition of anonymity.
Shami, who took 24 wickets in India’s spectacular World Cup campaign, played through agony due to landing issues but did not allow it hinder his performance.
Shami, who recently received the Arjuna Award, has 229 Test, 195 ODI, and 24 T20 wickets in his decade-long career.
The finding calls into doubt Shami’s injury rehabilitation management programme, which was planned by the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
It is now exceedingly improbable that the pace bowler will be able to return before India’s home Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand in October and November.
His ultimate goal could be the marquee away series versus Australia.
According to those in the know, the NCA’s conservative approach failed in Shami’s case.
“Shami should have gone right to surgery, and the NCA should have made that decision. Just two months of rest and injections would not have sufficed, and that is exactly what occurred. He is a valuable asset, and the Indian team will require him in Australia,” the insider stated.
