In the championship match on Sunday, India defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets to win their eighth Asia Cup trophy.
Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan, the openers, easily reached the target of 51 runs as Sri Lanka struggled to defend the lowest total in the Asia Cup’s ODI format.
Mohammed Siraj had earlier cast a spectacular 6 for 21 spell to demolish Sri Lanka for 50. His batting spell limited Lanka to only 15.2 overs, which was also their lowest ODI total ever against India.
Despite the heavy cloud cover, Sri Lanka chose to bat first after winning the toss, and the game began 40 minutes after its scheduled 3 PM start time.
The pacer became only the fourth bowler in ODI history to take four wickets in an over, matching former Lankan pacer Chaminda Vaas as the quickest to a five-wicket haul.
However, the brilliance of Siraj bowling extended beyond numbers. He entered the fray after Jasprit Bumrah ejected Kusal Perera in the third ball of the first over – a catch behind.
Siraj only had to pitch the ball in the right spots in conditions that reminded him more of London than Colombo.
In the fourth over, Siraj performed his destructive dance, hitting 3.1, 3.3, 3.4, and 3.6 balls. Pathum Nissanka, Sadeera Samaraiwickrama, Charith Asalanka, and Dhananjaya De Silva were the casualties.
But Siraj was not finished. He castled Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka and Kusal Mendis with peaches to finish their annihilation. After Siraj ended his spell, the Lankan innings was over. Hardik Pandya put the finishing touches on the game by grabbing three wickets.
