Due to an injury, the formers tennis world number one withdraws from the Billie Jean King Cup finals.
Naomi Osaka announced she would not participate in the Billie Jean King Cup finals next month due to an injury, it looks as though her season is ended. The four-time Grand Slam singles champion revealed her abdominal muscles had burst on Sunday in Tokyo. “I believed I had strained my back, but after doing an MRI in Beijing, they discovered that I had ruptured my abdominal muscles and bulged a disc in my back,” the 27-year-old was quoted as saying by Japan’s Kyodo News agency.
Since retiring from her China Open match against eventual champion Coco Gauff in the first round of the tournament at the beginning of the month, Osaka has remained sidelined.
She withdrew from this week’s Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo and the Japan Open in Osaka. Her program for 2024 would have concluded with the Billie Jean King Cup finals.
“I’ve played so many tournaments this year, so it was definitely the toughest decision to not play this and obviously not play BJK,” she stated.
“I really honestly enjoyed it so much, and I think it helped with my development as a player.”From November 13–20, Malaga, Spain, will host the Billie Jean King Cup finals.
For the first time since 2020, Osaka participated in the Billie Jean King Cup finals, helping Japan defeat Kazakhstan in April.
The Frenchman, who is most known for having been Serena Williams’ longtime coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, coached her in her debut match at the China Open.
With the birth of her daughter Shai in July 2023, she resumed tennis in January, although she has battled with consistency.
After having children, her two quarterfinal appearances have been her greatest performances.
