Since winning gold at the 2017 tournament in Bhubaneswar, Neeraj Chopra has not participated in the continental showcase.

Nearly all of the athletes who had performed well at the recently finished Federation Cup in Kochi made the cut, as India announced a 59-man squad for the upcoming Asian Athletics Championship in South Korea on Friday. Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was expected to miss the competition. Double Olympic champion Chopra’s absence from the event was expected given that, in addition to hosting the NC Classic in Bengaluru on May 24, his focus this season will be on the Diamond League Meetings and the World Championships in September.Since winning gold in the 2017 event in Bhubaneswar, Chopra has not participated in the continental showcase. Since then, he has continued to concentrate on the Olympics, World Championships, and DL Meetings.

After finishing a poor second at the Federation Cup, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, the shot putter who holds the national record and won gold in the most recent continental championships, was left off the squad.

Despite setting a new national record, pole vaulter Dev Kumar Meena failed to meet the Athletics Federation of India’s qualifying standard for the Asian Championships.Others, like Gulveer Singh (5000m and 10000m), Parul Chaudhary (women’s 3000m steeplechase), and Avinash Sable (men’s 3000m steeplechase), were added to the squad despite not competing in the Federation Cup because they were training and competing overseas with AFI’s approval.

Sprinter Animesh Kujur, who set a new national record in the 200-meter event, and triple jumper Praveen Chitravel, who equaled his own NR at the Federation Cup, are both included in the roster for the Asian Championships in Gumi from May 27–31.Annu Rani, the national record holder in the women’s javelin throw, was selected for the team based on her performance in the Indian Open Throws Competition in Mumbai in March, which saw her hurl 58.82 meters. Despite winning gold with a throw of 56.66 meters, the 32-year-old was unable to surpass the 58-meter qualifying standard for the Asian Championships during the Federation Cup. She had been having trouble breaking the 60-meter mark for a while.

All athletes, with the exception of those who received exemptions, were required to compete in the Federation Cup (April 21–24), the last selection event for the Asian Championships, if they were to be selected for the continental championships. With 27 medals, including 6 gold, 12 silver, and 9 bronze, India placed third behind China and Japan in the most recent edition held in Bangkok.
