Following his victory in the national camp trials, the 48 kg world champion will now compete in the 54 kg class.

Boxer has jumped up a weight class less than two months after she won the 48 kg world championship. Due to the Boxing Federation of India’s (BFI) new selection criteria, which favours in-camp evaluation over trials, the Bhiwani boxer will now participate in the 54 kg class.

Thursday in Patiala, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) held trials for entry into national camps. Ghanghas defeated Divya Pawar and Sakshi Choudhary to advance.

She was matched up against Jyoti Gulia in the final, but the match was abandoned because both finalists had been guaranteed a spot in the camp. Preeti Pawar, who earned her spot by making it to the pre-quarterfinals of the World Championships in March, is now joined by Ghanghas and Gulia.

Only the Olympic weights will be used at the camp, which is anticipated to start later this month. According to national coach Bhaskar Bhatt, only three boxers per weight class have received sanctioning thus far, but talks are ongoing to extend that number to four.

“I believe Nitu made a wise decision. She has worked hard to increase her strength and has good reach. She competed in the trials weighing only 52 kg, despite the fact that her maintenance weight is similarly between 51 and 52 kg. In 54 kg, she has the capacity to thrive, Bhatt continued.

According to Ghanghas, the choice was made because to BFI’s selection process. The 22-year-old athlete stated, “I am prepared for a trial with Nikhat, but given that there won’t be any trials for the Asian Games due to BFI policy, I thought of moving up a weight class.”

“Taking the risk is worthwhile. I’d much rather test myself in a harder division than wait for my time,” she continued.

BFI is anticipated to publish the full list of national campers the following week.
