Novak Djokovic of Serbia has attacked British supporters, accusing them of contempt after his Davis Cup quarter-final victory in Malaga on Thursday.
Novak Djokovic accused British fans of treating him with “disrespect” during his David Cup victory over Cameron Norrie, which secured Serbia’s 2-0 triumph over Great Britain. Djokovic said that some British fans tried to disturb him during his straight sets victory over Norrie, and that he yelled at them during his post-match interview, demanding that they stop talking.
Despite the boos from the fans, Djokovic cruised to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Norrie, placing Serbia in a semi-final match against Italy on Saturday.
“The entire match, pretty much, [they showed] disrespect, but again, that’s something I kind of have to be prepared for,” Djokovic explained. “In the Davis Cup, it’s normal that sometimes fans step over the line, but in the heat of the moment, you react too, and you, in a way, how can I say, show that you don’t allow this kind of behaviour.”
Some members of the British fan base started drumming so loudly that Djokovic’s voice was muffled during an on-court chat with the supporters after the match.
They can do anything they want, but I will react to that, I suppose. “Yeah, we had a little talk at the end because they were trying to bug me the entire match,” he continued.
Despite his desire to help Serbia win the Davis Cup, Djokovic acknowledged that he was exhausted after a long season.
Djokovic, who is looking to finish a fantastic year, continued, “Being there on the court for my country is always extra push, extra motivation.” “Part of me looks forward to rest and recalibration and leave the racquet on the side but right now I cannot allow myself to enjoy those thoughts about holidays.”
Every time he steps onto the court, Djokovic breaks records. Another fantastic season for Djokovic has seen him win the Australian, French, and US Opens. His only significant loss came against Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the Wimbledon final. He continued his dominance on Sunday at the ATP Finals in Turin, where he won a record-tying eighth championship to round off the circuit season.
In 21 Davis Cup singles matches since 2011, the Serb has not lost. With his 44th Davis Cup triumph, Djokovic has eclipsed former doubles No. 1 Nenad Zimonjic to break Serbia’s record for most Davis Cup match wins.
