William O’Rourke’s five wicket haul helped New Zealand restrict Sri Lanka to 305 during a severely shortened opening session on Day 2 of the first Test in Galle. When the weather pushed the players off the field once more and the authorities opted to call an early lunch, New Zealand was 5/0 after only one over of play.
In the third over of the morning, Ajaz Patel trapped Prabath Jayasuriya in front of Sri Lanka, who had begun the day at 302/7.
Rain started after the wicket and caused a 45-minute delay. As soon as play resumed, O’Rourke removed Ramesh Mendis (lbw) and Asitha Fernando (bowled), limiting Sri Lanka to just three further runs at the expense of three wickets.
With a single off Fernando, Tom Latham got things going, and Devon Conway hit his maiden boundary. However, it started to rain again, so the players had to hurry to the pavilion. Lunch was served at noon local time, and the rest of the schedule—tea at 3:10 pm and stumps at 6:00 pm, weather permitting—was changed.
