Pakistan Cricket Board Discloses Regarding Shaheen’s “Turning Down” Vice-Captaincy Row

Before the T20 World Cup the following month, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) revealed that Shaheen Shah Afridi was never considered for vice captaincy by the national selection.

Prior to the T20 World Cup in the Americas next month, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) revealed on Saturday that Shaheen Shah Afridi was never considered for the vice leadership position by the national selection. When the Pakistan team for the ICC final was selected on Friday, Afridi was reportedly offered the opportunity to be Babar Azam’s deputy. However, the left-arm bowler turned down the offer. A source close to one of the national selectors told PTI, “The selectors were shocked with this news because six out of seven selectors were not in favor of having a vice-captain to Babar Azam when they held their nearly two-hour online meeting on Friday.”

“As directed by the PCB Chairman, the meeting’s minutes are available for review. Consequently, the selectors were shocked to learn today that Shaheen had declined the vice leadership,” he mentioned.

It was later disclosed, though, that in March, Afridi had been asked if he would be interested in taking on the role of vice captain in the future in his own capacity as a selector. The pacer, however, politely declined the offer.

It was also not shocking at the time, as it was already clear that Babar would unseat him as the T20 captain after just one series.

According to a few reports on Saturday, Afridi was offered the vice captaincy earlier this week.

The source described it as an attempt on the part of certain external parties to damage PCB and selectors’ reputation.

“Shaheen was clearly unhappy that his stint as captain was cut short, considering he had only led one series in January in New Zealand,” the source stated.
