Ravi Shastri Offers Wise Counsel in the Face of Virat Kohli’s Dismal Performance in the T20 World Cup

In the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa in Barbados on June 29, Kohli, who has only scored 75 runs in seven innings thus far, will be looking to end the tournament royally.

Various cricket players, commentators, and fans have voiced their opinions over Virat Kohli’s persistent bad performance in the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup. But none more than former India coach Ravi Shastri has intimate knowledge of Kohli’s game. When leading Team India in all competitions, Shastri and Kohli forged a close relationship. Following the Indian captain’s defeat to England in the semi-final, Shastri advised Kohli to play to his strengths and refrain from pushing himself too much.

This isn’t his kind of game. Speaking on Star Sports, Shastri expressed his opinion that Rohit Sharma was playing aggressively, and that he was going too early for it.

“He is more orthodox, but he can make up quite easily if he spends more time at the crease,” Shastri remarked.

Kohli struck Reece Topley for a six in the third over of their match against England. Unfortunately, Kohli misjudged the ball while attempting to hit large towards mid-wicket, forcing him to head back to the dugout after just two balls.

“When he tries to get out of his zone, he will get out in that fashion,” Shastri explained.

“He attempted to create photos that were not there. You should do that when you are in peak form, with 300 runs in the competition. It is difficult to break free when there are no runs available. The crucial word is rhythm,” Shastri explained.

Despite Kohli’s struggles with the bat, his opening partner, Rohit Sharma, produced a stunning 39-ball 57. Suryakumar Yadav’s 47 off 36 balls and useful cameos at the back end helped India post 171 in 20 overs on a tough, damp Guyana pitch.

Former English cricketer Nasser Hussain stated, “I think Kohli should have played like Kohli has done for a decade.”

Kohli, who has only scored 75 runs in seven innings so far, will be looking to end the 2024 T20 World Cup royally by defeating South Africa on June 29 in Barbados with a large score.
