Chris Gayle, who changed the face of Twenty20 cricket during his illustrious career, had some of his most memorable moments in the TATA Indian Premier League. The West Indies great spoke about his undying love for the Royal Challengers Bangalore fans while speaking to Robin Uthappa on ‘Home of Heroes’.
Gayle then told a funny story about how one of his hits broke a fan’s nose. Fortunately, the incident ended on a funny note. “The ball bounced off the wall and struck a young girl in the nose. I went to the hospital right away and saw her with a bloody nose and bloody clothes. ‘Why are you sad?’ she asked. Don’t worry, hit more sixes!’ That was incredible, man. She made me feel better by saying that even though she was in pain, she wanted me to hit more sixes. It was a heartfelt moment. The following game, every fan held a placard that read, “Please break my nose so I can come visit them in the hospital.”
Gayle’s description of the incident led him to claim that RCB fans are the best in the IPL. “RCB has one of the best fan bases I’ve ever encountered. When the crowd at Chinnaswamy Stadium begins chanting ‘RCB! RCB!’ It’s the best there is. “RCB fans are the best.”
Gayle’s distinguished tenure with RCB established him as an IPL legend, and he claims that fans still remember him from his time there. Gayle will be forever associated with RCB for some of the greatest individual batting performances in the tournament’s history, despite stints in Punjab and Kolkata.
