Rohan Bopanna and Australian partner Matthew Ebden defeated Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in straight sets to get to the Miami Open men’s doubles final.
Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden advanced to the men’s doubles final of the Miami Open with a straight-set victory over Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos. The Australian Open winners, Bopanna and Ebden, breezed past Spain’s Granollers and Argentina’s Zeballos in the semifinals on Thursday night, 6-1 6-4. Bopanna had slid to second place in the doubles rankings after losing in the quarterfinals at the Dubai Championships and in the round of 32 at the Indian Wells Masters, but his semifinal victory here will help him reclaim first place when the rankings are updated on Monday.
The 44-year-old Bopanna became the oldest player to ever hold the top spot in the ATP rankings after winning the Australian Open.
Bopanna and Ebden will face American Austin Krajicek and Croatian Ivan Dodig in the championship match. Austin Krajicek defeated Tim Putz and Kevin Krawietz of Germany 6-4 6-7(7) 10-7 in the other semifinal.
This will be Bopanna’s 14th ATP Masters 1000 final, and his first one in Miami. In total, he will be competing in his 63rd ATP Tour level final. He has won 25 doubles titles thus far.
This will also be the fifth appearance in an ATP Masters 1000 final for the Bopanna and Ebden pairing.Bopanna accomplished an exceptional achievement by being the second Indian, behind Leander Paes, to make it to the final of every one of the nine ATP Masters tournaments.
