Saina Nehwal, an Indian badminton legend, has criticized internet trolls who claimed her bronze medal win at the 2012 London Olympics was a “gift”. Nehwal is India’s first badminton medalist at the Olympics. She took bronze in London 2012, defeating China’s Wang Xin. In fact, Saina was down 0-1, 18-21 in the bronze medal match when Xin retired due to a knee injury.
Nehwal has recently come under fire on the internet for her outspoken views, with some questioning her bronze medal achievement at the London Olympics. In response to the trolls, Saina and sister Parupalli Kashyap expressed their views on trolling.
“During the Paris Olympics, she said something, and in the comments (on social media), I saw people saying she was gifted the bronze medal,” Kashyap claimed in an interview with RJ Anmol and actor Amrita Rao, before Saina chimed in.
‘Olympic level ke layak toh bano. Forget about the bronze medal. Saina stated, “First, you must become capable of qualifying for the Olympics.”
